Ingredients
1 loaf brioche or challah bread
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup whole milk
5 large eggs
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
1. Melt the butter and brown sugar in a saucepan until smooth and bubbling. Pour into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Slice brioche or challah into 1-inch slices and arrange them snugly over the caramel base.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
4. Pour the custard evenly over the bread, covering each slice well.
5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
6. The next morning, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Let dish sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
7. Bake uncovered for 35–45 minutes, until the top is golden and edges are bubbling.
8. Remove from oven, sprinkle granulated sugar on top, and broil for 1–2 minutes until caramelized. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
