Description
These Perfect Sugar Cookies are buttery, soft, and perfect for decorating or enjoying plain. They’re easy to roll, hold their shape when baked, and offer the perfect balance of vanilla sweetness in every bite.
Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
0.5 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
2.5 cups all-purpose flour
0.5 teaspoon baking powder
0.25 teaspoon salt
Instructions
1. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
2. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until fully combined.
3. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture until a soft dough forms.
4. Divide dough into two discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface.
6. Cut into shapes and place on parchment-lined baking sheets.
7. Bake 8–10 minutes, until edges are just beginning to brown.
8. Let cool 5 minutes on the sheet before transferring to a wire rack.
Notes
Chill the dough well before rolling to help prevent spreading.
Use parchment paper for even baking and easy cleanup.
For decorating, let cookies cool completely before icing.
