Char Siu Chicken is a sweet-savory baked chicken dish with a glossy glaze, tender texture, and rich flavor from hoisin, soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger, and Chinese five spice. It is easy enough for a weeknight dinner but bold enough to feel like a special homemade takeout-style meal.
Ingredients
2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs
1/4 cup hoisin sauce
3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 tablespoon sesame oil
3 cloves garlic minced
1 teaspoon fresh ginger grated
1 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/4 teaspoon red food coloring optional
2 green onions sliced
1 teaspoon sesame seeds
Instructions
1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, Chinese five spice, white pepper, and optional red food coloring until smooth.
2. Place the chicken thighs in a bowl or zip-top bag and pour the marinade over them. Coat well, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
3. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top if available. Arrange the marinated chicken in a single layer.
4. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and beginning to caramelize around the edges.
5. Brush the chicken with extra sauce during the last 5 minutes of baking for a glossy finish.
6. Broil for 2 to 4 minutes, watching closely, until slightly charred in spots.
7. Rest for 5 minutes, then slice and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds before serving.
Notes
For the juiciest result, use chicken thighs instead of chicken breast.
Marinating overnight gives the chicken deeper flavor and better color.
Watch closely while broiling so the glaze caramelizes without burning.
