Description
Soft and Chewy Sugar Cookies are a classic homemade treat with buttery flavor, lightly crisp edges, and tender centers. They are easy to make with simple pantry ingredients and come out perfectly soft with a delicate sugar coating that gives each bite just the right finish.
Ingredients
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons milk
1/4 cup granulated sugar for rolling
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
4. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and milk, then mix until smooth and fully combined.
5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix just until a soft dough forms.
6. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll them into balls.
7. Roll each dough ball in the remaining 1/4 cup granulated sugar.
8. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between each one.
9. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the edges are set and the centers still look soft.
10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
Use room temperature butter for a smoother dough and better texture.
Do not overbake because the cookies continue to set as they cool.
For thicker cookies, chill the dough for 30 minutes before baking.
