Description
Southern Fried Cabbage is a savory skillet side dish made with tender cabbage, smoky bacon, sweet onion, and simple seasonings for an easy comfort food favorite.
Ingredients
6 slices bacon
1 medium yellow onion, sliced
1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
2 tablespoons chicken broth
Instructions
1. Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate and leave about 2 tablespoons of bacon grease in the skillet.
2. Add the sliced onion to the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
3. Stir in the chopped cabbage and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it starts to wilt.
4. Add the garlic, butter, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, red pepper flakes, and chicken broth. Stir well to combine.
5. Continue cooking for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and lightly caramelized.
6. Crumble the bacon over the cabbage, toss gently, and serve warm.
Notes
Use green cabbage for the best texture and classic flavor.
Do not stir too often if you want lightly browned edges on the cabbage.
For a heartier dish, add sliced smoked sausage during the last few minutes of cooking.
